What’s in a name?

I’ve been asked which title do I prefer?

Is it hairstylist, hair dresser, hair magician, hair artist and etc? I’ve thought about it, but never came to a clear decision. My American certificate says cosmetologist, but in Russia, we are referred to as hairstylists. I heard a hair educator say he does not want to be referred to as a hair artist because it makes him feel as if he should be providing avant garde haircuts with tails left out of solid lines. The statement makes sense to me.

I know the proper title for the people serving passengers on a plane is flight attendant and not stewardess. Unfortunately and fortunately, society did not define our title as the caretakers of your hair. I guess it allows us the creative freedom to choose for ourselves.

Does one title make you feel a certain way about your hair service provider?
